what we do

Whether you are looking to reduce or make your utility bills more predictable, add value to your home, or have energy security well into the future, roof mounted solar can provide decades of benefits.

STEP 1

Initially, Mighty Dog will provide a no-cost roof and solar evaluation and estimate. We do this to make sure that your roof will provide both the solar exposure needed to meet your energy goals and a lasting structure for mounting the system.

STEP 3

Once engineering is completed and plan sets are drawn up, the permitting process begins. This requires approval and permits from the city or county, as well as the utility. Additionally, if you live in a covenanted community, you may have to seek approval from your Homeowner’s Association.

STEP 5

The final step before producing your own clean energy is the city or county inspection and permission to operate from the utility.

STEP 2

Next, our team will begin the structural and electrical engineering process. This ensures that the roof and solar system can be mounted as expected and safely handle whatever the weather decides to throw at it.

STEP 4

After permits and approvals have been received, materials will be ordered and a date for installation can be scheduled. On your installation date, a crew of skilled installation technicians will arrive to install and test the system.

STEP 6

In addition to being able to monitor your system on your phone or computer, our partner will monitor the system, 24/7, for the next 25 years. If anything should happen during that period, both you and our team will be notified.

Solar FAQ's

What incentives are available to me?

In addition to the 30% Federal Income Tax credit, Idaho offers a Residential Alternative Energy Tax Deduction. This statute allows taxpayers an income tax deduction of 40% of the cost of a solar, wind, geothermal, and certain biomass energy devices used for heating or electricity generation. Taxpayers can apply this 40% deduction in the year in which the system is installed and can also deduct 20% of the cost each year for three years thereafter. The maximum deduction in any one year is $5,000. The total maximum deduction is $20,000.

Do I get paid for my extra energy production?

Idaho’s three investor-owned utilities all participate in a net-metering program. What this means is that for an any excess power you generate, when your system is providing more power than your house needs, you will receive a credit for that amount of power. These credits are applied when the system is generating less than the house needs, such as at night or in inclement weather.

How much maintenance does a solar system need?

Very little. In most areas, natural precipitation is enough to clean the panels. In particularly dusty areas, a spray down from a hose will do the trick.

How do solar systems fare in extreme weather conditions?

Solar PV systems are designed with significant loads in mind. This includes heavy snow loads, hail events, extreme temperatures and high wind events. Your system will be designed for its location, taking those factors into consideration.

How does a solar system affect my roof integrity?

PV mounting systems are designed to integrate with the roofing system without compromising it. However, using a solar installer that is approved by a roofing professional helps to ensure that.

Does a solar system require permits?

Yes. Each new system requires permits and approvals, which themselves require engineering evaluations and approvals. Additionally, they must be inspected before the utility will provide permission to operate.

Will my system still generate power during a blackout?

A simple solar system will not. However, there are systems that can provide backup during daylight or battery backup systems to supply critical loads 24/7.

I don’t plan on being in my home for 25 years. Why would I add solar?

Some add solar for the utility savings, which can be immediate in some cases. For others it is an investment in the home, as solar-equipped homes tend to sell faster and owning a PV system increases the value of the home.

Can a solar system be insured?

Roof mounted PV systems are generally covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy, but you will want to check with your provider to make sure.

Are there any fire, electrical or other dangers from a solar system?

There are several safety systems built into modern PV systems, including rapid shutdown and anti-islanding systems. These limit the dangers to the home and allow first responders to safely operate in case of an emergency.
