Don't wait, though! Additional damage and trouble from things like mold can add up quickly. Book yours today.

    • How long will it take to install a new roof?

Mighty Dog Says: Depending on the size of your roof and the repairs we need to make under the roof, typically most roofs can be completed within 1-2 days.

    • What if the weather forecast isn’t ideal on the day the work is scheduled? What is your process?
We take safety very seriously for our customers and our crews installing your roof. We look at weather reports throughout the day to ensure the correct conditions are present to support the safety of our crew and the success of your project. If the winds are too high, or there is rain in the forecast, we will call to discuss the safety issues with you and possibly adjust the schedule.
    • What safety precautions do you have in place?
The installation of roofs is probably one of the most dangerous jobs in the construction industry and we take it very seriously. This is supervised by our trained team throughout the project. If you have questions or concerns at any time please contact your sales team for a quick response.
    • How do I know if I need a new roof?

There are many things we look at, but the main one is the age of the roof. If your home’s roof is 20 years or older, it will probably need to be replaced.

If you have been in a recent weather event, it is imperative you get your roof inspected for any damage. An annual inspection will ensure you will get the most life out of your roof.

Would you like a free roof inspection? Book yours today by contacting us!

    • Repair or replace my roof?

Our 25-point inspection will clearly identify all the issues, big and small, that you may have to consider to determine whether you need a simple repair or maintenance issue, or for a complete replacement of your roof.

The NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) recommends a homeowner conduct a roof inspection twice a year on their roof. Schedule your roof inspection by contacting your local Mighty Dog Roofing office.

    • Before I get a new roof, what is the best underlayment for me to use to avoid any future leaks?
We use an ice and water shield over the entire roof. This ice and water shield is made of polyethylene and rubberized asphalt. Ice and water shields prevent water that could slip under the shingles and can prevent water from damaging your interior ceilings and walls. Mdr also uses metal flashings on the valleys of your roof as well.
    • My roof has black stains, what does it mean?
Stains on roofs have a variety of causes. Often the unsightly streaks are algae growing on or even under your shingles. Prevention is important and our superhero trained exterior inspectors will be able to give you a diagnosis and offer solutions to avoid further damage. To stop the algae, we can mount zinc or copper strips near your roof’s ridge. Every time it rains, the water can wash over those strips releasing the ions from the metal and this will inhibit algae from continuing to grow. If you have this problem and it is time for a new roof, we can recommend algae-resistant shingles with warranties.
    • I have shingles on one side of my house which are hanging over the gutters, is it normal?
It sounds like the installation may have been incorrect. Shingles should only extend past the drip edge of the roof by about ½ to ¾ inch. We can diagnose this during inspection and repair this for you.
    • I need to re-roof but the roof has two or more layers of shingles on it already. Do I have to have them taken off?
Yes you need to take all layers of shingles off before installing a new roofing system. We need to see what is under those layers to ensure a safe foundation for your new roof and you don't need any additional weight. Removing them will also assure it looks better and cleaner, and will last longer. Many warranties will not cover more than one layer.
    • How often should I have my roof inspected?

The NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) recommends checking your roof twice a year. Our mighty watchdog maintenance program gives you peace of mind with an annual 25-point inspection.

Need your roof inspection? Schedule your service today!

    • How will you protect my landscaping, my kids, and my animals?

As per our White Paw Service, we'll wrap your house with our proprietary Protective House Cape. The cape will shield your siding, landscaping, AC unit, and yard from roofing debris.

After the job, we'll conduct a thorough cleanup. We'll use a magnetic tool to sweep the area for any remaining nails, ensuring a safe space for kids and pets.

We provide you with a Top 10 list of things to prepare before your roof installation. You can also find them on our website.
    • What are snow guards? Do I need them?
Snow guards are installed near the eaves to effectively hold ice and snow in place until it melts. Our MDR inspection consultation will give you the options you will need for your particular property.
    • I have green moss growing on my roof should I worry?

Yes - you should do all you can to clean the moss off your roof. Moss can trap moisture, leading to roof damage, leaks, and potential structural issues.

Moss also catches debris—twigs, leaves, dirt—which worsens the moisture problem. You probably need new roofing if you see shingles with surface cracks, small blisters, curled-up edges, or areas where the surface granules have worn off.

Here are a few tips for cleaning and preventing moss:

      • Install Zinc or Copper Strips. An easy way to get rid of the moss and prevent it from returning is to install zinc or copper strips near the roof ridge, above the areas where moss tends to grow. Rain washing over the strips will leach out metal ions and send them down the roof, preventing new moss from taking hold. Ask your Mighty Dog representative to show you how we can help install this.
      • Clean Off of the Moss. Visit our blog to learn more ways to remove moss from your roof.
      • Trim Branches. Also, trim any overhanging tree branches as much as you can. Moss thrives in the shade trees provide and the debris they drop.
    • Do I need to worry about icicles on my roof in the winter?
They are pretty to look at sometimes, but let's leave it for the Christmas tree. Icicles actually represent a problem known as ice dams, which form when snow melts and refreezes before it can leave your roof and gutters. The ice dam can then force water under the shingles causing leaks. Our MDR inspector will speak with you about this at your Inspection and give you options to avoid this problem.
  • Gutter Repair & Installation

    • Do I need to replace gutters at the same time as my roof?
Our Mighty Dog Roofing inspectors will assess the condition of your gutters during your Mighty 25 inspection. You do not have to replace your gutters just because your roof is being replaced; however, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, replacing your gutters at the same time as the roof means your exterior will all have the same updates at the same time, and you will know they work together well. If your home has gutters with seams, this is a great time to switch to seamless gutters. These types of gutters will make your roof safer and more efficient. This is something to talk to your inspector about during your LIVE tour.
    • I have shingles on one side of my house which are hanging over the gutters, is it normal?
It sounds like the installation may have been incorrect. Shingles should only extend past the drip edge of the roof by about ½ to ¾ inch. We can diagnose this during inspection and repair this for you.

  • Skylight Repair & Installation

    • Do you offer solar-powered skylight systems and are they eligible for a federal tax credit?
Our manufacturer, VELUX, has many different options that include solar-powered units and yes they are eligible for the federal tax credit. Please visit Velux's tax credit page to learn more.
    • What products are included for the federal tax credit with VELUX?
Our friends at VELUX state: All VELUX products with solar-powered components qualify for the federal tax credit under "Solar Electric Property" expenditures when purchased and installed from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2021. These products include:
      • VELUX Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights
      • VELUX Manual "Fresh Air" Skylights with factory-installed solar-powered blinds
      • VELUX Fixed Skylights with factory-installed solar-powered blinds
      • VELUX Residential Rigid Sun Tunnels with Solar Night Lights
      • VELUX Solar Powered Blinds
    • I have an existing skylight. Can I add a blind to it?
If you have your existing product ID or serial number, we can look for the blind that might work for you. If you had Mighty Dog install your skylight, we will have that on record in our secure Customer Vault that is included with every service we perform.
    • I have trouble with seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.). Does installing skylights help with that?
We all get a little deprived of sunlight in those long winter months, and S.A.D. can truly become an issue. Studies show that having natural, full-spectrum sunlight entering your home can help overcome those feelings. Bringing the sun into your home while you work and relax can help with some of those overwhelming issues of lack of sunlight.
    • What is a roof window? Is it different from a skylight?
Our manufacturer explains it as such:
A roof window is a specific unit designed for an installation that's within reach. VELUX's roof window sash can be pivoted so you can clean the exterior pane of the glass from inside. Additionally, some larger roof window models meet building code requirements for egress (emergency escape). Often, roof windows are installed in attics that are used as living spaces. Skylights, on the other hand, are usually installed in "out-of-reach" applications”.
    • What if my skylight breaks, are they safe?
Part of the reason we chose VELUX was because of their safety. They offer a laminated glass product for any of their skylights installed over 8 feet. Lamination is the safety measure that prevents glass from falling should the skylight break.
    • What can I do to decrease heat and light coming from the skylight? Is there a DIY product I can use?
Yes there are a variety of solutions to help you control the amount of light and heat your skylight offers throughout the day. Talk to one of your Mighty Dog Roofing sales representatives to show you options. We highly recommend letting our experts handle installation, as do-it-yourself solutions VOID the 10-year warranty on your glass. Talk to one of your Mighty Dog Roofing sales representatives to show you options.
    • I am in a storm area that seems to get hail all the time. Can hail break my skylight?
Our manufacturer VELUX states that as they are the world leader in skylights, they stand behind their products with a hail breakage warranty. According to their literature, they have even tested them in areas with hail balls the size of baseballs shot at the glass at over 100 mph! So, it is not likely that hail would break your VELUX skylight, and having your 10 year warranty against cracks or breaks due to hail would protect you.
    • Why is my skylight leaking?
Sometimes condensation can form on your skylight and if it is not properly installed, it can allow moist, warm air to leak through. Adding felt and insulation between the frame and rough opening should prevent any further leaking. Ask your Mighty Dog sales representative for an inspection of your skylight.

  • Mighty Watchdog Warranty

    • Is my warranty transferable?

Upon completion of inspection prior to the sale of your home, we will transfer our warranty one time during our workmanship warranty. Each manufacturer also will transfer the warranty as defined by their company. This is a gift of peace of mind for the buyer of your home; they will receive the same great service you received as our customer.

    • Do I need a manufacturer’s warranty?

Yes, your manufacturer’s warranty is important as they cover the cost of materials that were in any way defective. They will also back up the workmanship completed if it is not covered. The manufacturer’s and the workmanship warranty given by MDR are complementary to each other.

    • Which is the best kind of manufacturer’s warranty?

Each manufacturer offers different kinds of warranties, but usually can be categorized as original cost, no dollar limit, and prorated. Original cost warranties only cover repairs up to the cost of the original product. The no dollar limit is what is recommended as it is not prorated and the manufacturer is covering the total cost of repairs to make it whole again. A prorated warranty decreases overticks.

    • Is the manufacturer warranty free?

MDR only works with reputable national manufacturers that offer the best warranties on the market. To qualify for these kinds of warranties, we use their installation processes and are many times inspected directly by the manufacturer. Each manufacturer offers a free warranty of some type, and then you can protect your investment further by purchasing additional coverage warranties.

  • Solar Installation & Replacement

    • What incentives are available to me?
In addition to the 30% Federal Income Tax credit, Idaho offers a Residential Alternative Energy Tax Deduction. This statute allows taxpayers an income tax deduction of 40% of the cost of a solar, wind, geothermal, and certain biomass energy devices used for heating or electricity generation. Taxpayers can apply this 40% deduction in the year in which the system is installed and can also deduct 20% of the cost each year for three years thereafter. The maximum deduction in any one year is $5,000. The total maximum deduction is $20,000.
    • Do I get paid for my extra energy production?
Idaho’s three investor-owned utilities all participate in a net-metering program. What this means is that for an any excess power you generate, when your system is providing more power than your house needs, you will receive a credit for that amount of power. These credits are applied when the system is generating less than the house needs, such as at night or in inclement weather.
    • How much maintenance does a solar system need?
Very little. In most areas, natural precipitation is enough to clean the panels. In particularly dusty areas, a spray down from a hose will do the trick.
    • How do solar systems fare in extreme weather conditions?
Solar PV systems are designed with significant loads in mind. This includes heavy snow loads, hail events, extreme temperatures and high wind events. Your system will be designed for its location, taking those factors into consideration.
    • How does a solar system affect my roof integrity?
PV mounting systems are designed to integrate with the roofing system without compromising it. However, using a solar installer that is approved by a roofing professional helps to ensure that.
    • Does a solar system require permits?
Yes. Each new system requires permits and approvals, which themselves require engineering evaluations and approvals. Additionally, they must be inspected before the utility will provide permission to operate.
    • Will my system still generate power during a blackout?
A simple solar system will not. However, there are systems that can provide backup during daylight or battery backup systems to supply critical loads 24/7.
    • I don't plan on being in my home for 25 years. Why would I add solar?
Some add solar for the utility savings, which can be immediate in some cases. For others it is an investment in the home, as solar-equipped homes tend to sell faster and owning a PV system increases the value of the home.
    • Can a solar system be insured?
Roof mounted PV systems are generally covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy, but you will want to check with your provider to make sure.
    • Are there any fire, electrical or other dangers from a solar system?
There are several safety systems built into modern PV systems, including rapid shutdown and anti-islanding systems. These limit the dangers to the home and allow first responders to safely operate in case of an emergency.
